Doing Things Poorly

We’ve all heard the expression that if something is worth doing, it’s worth doing right. I disagree. I believe that if something is worth doing, and you can’t do it right, it’s worth doing it anyway you can. Sometimes when we’re feeling down or struggling with low motivation, doing a thing right seems overwhelming. Or maybe we don’t know how to do it.

When applied to art, this idea might prevent people from singing or dancing because they don’t believe they are good enough at it. It might prevent people from drawing or painting making some other kind of art. But in choosing not to try, you rob yourself of the opportunity to learn! Right now, many of us have more free time than usual. Why not try something new? Why make art even if we’re not “good” at it?

As for myself, I painted some very… rudimentary flowers the other day. My art is probably never going to be featured in the Louvre, but I had fun making it. Isn’t that really the point anyway? I challenge you to do something poorly. What have you got to lose?
