How to Accomplish Difficult Things in Four Steps

  1.    Evaluate your motivation: Why do you want to do the thing? Use that “why” as a motivator to continue working on the thing. Maybe write it on a post-it and put that post-it on your bathroom mirror to remind yourself why doing the thing is worth it.
  2.   Make a plan: How will you go about accomplishing the thing? Make a detailed plan. It is not enough to say, “I will do the thing”. If it was, you would probably not be reading this. How will you know when the thing is done? Print out a SMART goal map worksheet from Google and fill it out. This will ensure that your plan is Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant and Timely. Make sure you’ve broken down the steps into manageable pieces.
  3.   Do the thing: Follow the plan that you made. You’ve got this! If it still seems daunting, perhaps the thing needs to be broken down into even smaller steps.
  4.   Pat yourself on the back: You will feel such a sense of accomplishment after doing the thing. You have earned bragging rights by doing the thing, so pat yourself on the back, you successful person, you!
