My work with addictions often discovers that the origin of the addictive behavior lies in an insecure attachment, during childhood, to the primary caregiver. In treatment, after the withdrawal stabilizes, myself and the addict examine the relationship with the primary caregiver during childhood. When successful the connection between the insecure attachment and the addiction are identified and severed. The need for the addiction is eliminated.
